Reviewing Waste Management at Loughborough University

Loughborough University is recognised as a leading Higher Education Institution. In 2009 it was awarded ‘University of the Year’ by the Sunday Times University Guide. It is also ambitious in improving its sustainability performance and has been recognised for a range of achievements including twice winning in the Sound Impact Awards, being Highly Commended for a Green Gown Award for its “Energy League” and winning the ‘letsrecycle.com’ awards for waste management in it Halls of Residence and Catering areas.

Revise has recently been working with Loughborough to help the University build on its achievements and become a leader in waste management in the Higher Education Sector. This has started with an in-depth waste management audit to help ensure legal compliance and identify opportunities to prevent, minimise and recycle its waste.

The opportunities identified will assist the University in streamlining its operation, meeting its recycling target for 2010 and also in setting their medium and long term vision and goals for waste management. This will include the provision of comprehensive staff training, improvements in facilities and the implementation of a sustainable waste management contract that will improve efficiency and reduce costs.

Jo Hasbury, the Sustainability Manager for Loughborough University said “With increasing pressure on our resources at a global level it is important to identify ways to become more efficient in preserving the resources we do have. Waste is often considered someone else’s problem and yet we all create it every day. At Loughborough University our waste production leads to an increase in our carbon footprint and it costs us a lot of money to dispose of. Taking a more sustainable approach means we can review our role in NOT buying, improve contract management and increase recycling rates. It is also our responsibility to contribute to a reduction in waste to landfill.

Legal compliance is our main priority and Loughborough is keen to meet its Duty of Care by providing a network of support for key staff to ensure they can take ownership of waste management for their respective areas.

Universities are often complex organisations and Revise provides a flexible and thorough approach to auditing. Understanding the nature of these institutions and the range of staff that work within them is important when obtaining key information on processes and procedures. Colleagues responded well to the team. Timescales were met and the service provided was professional and good value".
